Front Door Locking

Lately, I've noticed that the front door has been improperly locked much more frequently than in the past. After checking the door, I think I may know what is causing the problem.

The latch controlled by the door nob does not force the door in the correct position to insert the deadbolt. In order to properly lock the door, it must be pulled closed while locking the deadbolt.

These photos illustrate the difference between the locked and incorrectly locked (unlocked) forms of our front door. Although there is considerable conformational homology, note that when the door is actually locked, the key is turned clockwise beyond vertical. Note also, that there is a very satisfying metallic clunking sound when the deadbolt actually slides into place.

Please check your key craftspersonship by trying to open the door: turn the door nob and push.

This video demonstrates an incorrect and a correct locking technique. Note how the door can be opened following the use of the incorrect technique. Also, note the very satisfying metallic clunking sound that the lock makes when it actually slides into place. Unlike Mick Jagger, we can all get satisfaction.
